I am not much help. I am a canon girl. hehe My first camera was a Canon Rebel XT. I used it for two years, then I felt I outgrew it and now I have a Canon 30D and love it, but am drooling over a Canon 5D. Good luck.

Going with Nikon's d40 or d40x will limit you in the selection of lenses. I'm not very familiar with it, but if I recall correctly, you won't be able to use the 50 mm 1.8 which is a cheap and excellent lens.

I'd read up on it

If you're going for Nikon, I'd step up and get the d80. It's fantastic and you won't quickly outgrow it
